Some may say that the recession didn’t have an impact on charitable giving from members at Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union. Based out of St. Paul, Minn., members of the credit union haven’t waivered in their commitment to help those in need not only in their communities, but across the country.

Three days following the devastation caused by the tornados that ripped through Moore, Okla., Affinity Plus announced that they would be collecting donations of cash and Participation Rewards points in a relief fund that would be given to the American Red Cross to help provide food, water and relief supplies to those in need. In addition, Affinity Plus would be matching all donations up to $20,000. After collecting donations from May 23 to June 28, Affinity Plus is proud to announce that the total amount of donations collected was $3,916.07, and with the match, the total amount that will be donated is $7,832.14.

“What we want people to understand is that our commitment to changing the world one person at a time is inspired each and every day by our members. They’re the ones who came to us and asked us to open an account to collect their cash and Participation Rewards points donations for the people of Moore,” states Kyle L. Markland, President and CEO of Affinity Plus. “They truly exemplify the cooperative spirit of people helping people, and we’re proud to serve them and call them our members.”

Since 2005, Affinity Plus, the largest credit union in the state of Minnesota with state-owned assets, has supported the American Red Cross by collecting donations of cash and Participation Rewards points from their members and employees. In 2012, the credit union collected $6,840 in donations for the Red Cross, and matched donations made to a separate fund that was created for Hurricane Sandy Relief for the total amount raised equaling $13,365.

This year, Affinity Plus has collected more than $30,000 in donations for its Partner Charities which include Special Olympics Minnesota, Second Harvest Heartland, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, American Red Cross Twin Cities, and the Affinity Plus Foundation. In their 2012 Annual Report, the credit union reported more than $110,000 collected in donations from members and employees that were given to their Partner Charities.
