Hold on! Let’s address the big frozen elephant in the room. There are people jumping into lakes all across Minnesota when the water is literally FREEZING. That just doesn’t seem right, does it? Until you meet the athletes of Special Olympics, hear their stories of teamwork, challenge and victory, you may never understand what will compel thousands of people into the frigid waters of many Minnesota lakes this season. These athletes have enough passion and joy not only to warm you up, but to fire you up in support of Special Olympics Minnesota.
The Polar Bear Plunge is an invigorating opportunity – for the spirit and for the body! Started in 1998 with just 65 participants, the Plunge drew more than 13,000 participants in 2013 ranging from youths to CEO’s. Adding extra flair in 2013, Special Olympics Minnesota created the Executive Challenge and featured 16 CEO’s who plunged to raise more than $160,000.00. This year there are, as of this post, 11 CEO’s taking the plunge. Each is required to raise $10,000.00 in donations for Special Olympics.
Still not cooled off from the excitement of last year’s plunge, Affinity Plus is honored to have its President and CEO, Dave Larson, participating in the Executive Challenge on Friday February 28th at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. We asked Dave how he anticipated feeling on Plunge day and, without hesitation he asked back, “Before or after?” Well, we got both, and his responses were, “No doubt…scared” and “Excited to part of this great cause!”, respectively. You can catch his plunging action live on FOX 9 News Friday February 28th. You also can join in support of Special Olympics Minnesota through donating toward Dave’s plunge or plunging* yourself along with other Affinity Plus employees’, members’ and friends’ various teams throughout the state.
It’s time to get ready and to start dialing back the water temp in the shower in preparation for your plunge. We’re looking forward to seeing you out there at this year’s plunges all across Minnesota.
