Dave Larson Named “Outstanding Professional of the Year”

ST. PAUL, MINN. (May 3, 2019) – Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce the credit union’s President/CEO Dave Larson received Minnesota Credit Union Network’s (MnCUN’s) 2019 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award. Larson was presented this award at a ceremony during the MnCUN 2019 Annual Conference on April 26, 2019, in Bloomington.

This award recognizes the notable service of an outstanding credit union professional who has selflessly given time, effort and talent to the support and promotion of the credit union mission and who has gone above and beyond to improve the credit union culture in Minnesota.

“I am truly humbled and grateful to be recognized for such a prestigious award,” said Larson. “This award would not have been possible without the people I get to work with each and every day. I attribute so much of our success to our employees. They’re really the ‘secret sauce’ of what happens here. It’s something I’m really proud of and really thankful for.”

A 5-Year Leadership History
In November of 2013, Larson was officially named President/CEO of Affinity Plus. Since that time, the credit union has experienced a lot of change. Substantial improvements were made in many areas, including financial strength, employee engagement, quality work and digital presence. The first two years of Larson’s leadership were focused on improving the financial strength and viability of the cooperative. Affinity Plus’ financial performance has gotten progressively stronger year after year, increasing the credit union’s net worth ratio from 7.50% in December 2013 to 9.57% in December 2018 – an increase of more than $78 million.

It is this kind of success that has allowed Affinity Plus to make substantial investments back into the cooperative, including an upgraded technology infrastructure. In 2016, Affinity Plus embarked on a three-year journey to replace seven of its major technology systems, intended to move the credit union forward and prepare for the future. This new technology foundation allows Affinity Plus to become a more efficient, effective organization for its employees and members.

As the CEO of the credit union, Larson led the charge to make these investments, provided support and trust to team members, and inspired employees with his vision. Throughout the slate of conversions – which concluded in Oct. 2018 – Larson repeatedly shared his admiration for the project leadership, employee support and organizational focus.

“How we got here is not me – it’s the 560 employees who bring it every day. I am so proud of our workforce,” Larson said. “The most important thing I’ve learned in leadership is the importance of results, and our employees bring results each and every day.”

In 2018, Larson also received the Star Tribune “Top CEO” award out of all large companies (500+ employees) in Minnesota. Affinity Plus has received several awards and honors, being named the “Best-In-State Credit Union,” by Forbes and a Top 150 Workplace by the Star Tribune.

Larson and the Affinity Plus team continue to give back to the credit union community, offering knowledge and engagement in a variety of committees and task forces. Larson serves as Chair of the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation Board of Directors and on MnCUN’s Political Involvement and Advocacy Fund Committees. He also serves as a member of the Special Olympics Minnesota Board of Directors.
